tae kwon do

The world of taekwondo

Taekwondo is the martial art I studied at a younger age. The taekwondo forms, kicks and patterns have fascinated me since I first saw them. I took actual lessons at the ages of 13 through 15. I still remember every pattern today. I had earned white, yellow, and green belts. For this school that was half way to black belt.

My Mother placed me at a YMCA and I fell under the famous Yoo Jin Kim Academy. His sons are still teaching today as Kim Brothers Karate, based in Georgia.

At the time I was taking lessons in 1974 I understood the style to be moo duk kwon. I think this style is now called jidokwan. I posess a green belt in Jidokwan taekwondo. Jidokwan means "Way of Wisdom"

taekwondo forms

I still remember the forms I learned as a child. Taegeuk one two and three and Pinon one two and three as well as the four corners offense defense forms and patterns. These patterns will be different from school to school and the different styles of the taekwondo have their own forms. As a green belt we were already sparring as well. The kicks and method of punching remain quite the same throughout these arts.

history of taekwondo

Tae kwon do can be roughly translated as "hand and foot fighting". It's history goes back 5000 years but most recently it it is a group of nine styles that have become under the umbrella name of taekwondo. Some of these styles are Moo Duk Kwon, Jidokwan, Tang Soo Do, Hapkido, Hyeong and others.

Taekwondo has become the national sport of South Korea. As far as the number of people that practice martial arts Taekwondo would rank as number one in practioners. In the year 2000 Taekwon do became an olympic event and is wildly popular. The views of the history vary and is a controversial subject. In the south practioners believe that Kukkiwon came from earlier forms of Korean martial arts. Others believe that it is heavily influnced by other countries such as Japan's Karate.

Taekwondo is famous for it's kicking techniques which is different from the Japanese arts and other styles of Kung-Fu. It is believed that the leg is the longest and most powerful of the human weapons so it would have the greatest ability to deliver strong blows.

The two major organizatios involved with Taekwondo today are the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) and the World Taekwondo Federation. The belt system will differ from school to school but may be something like white, yellow, green, blue, brown, and black. Each school has it's own ways for rank and titles. Since taekwondo came to be in several schools, there are different phiolosophies for each of them. In the competitions there are four judges. There is one in each corner. Points are scored by powerful strikes to the allowed areas of the body.
