The mixed martial arts
The mixed martial arts first caught the public's eye with the begning of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). Of course there were no-holds-barred tournaments before that but none that were thrown before the public eye like the UFC. For the first time America got to see two competitors fight with little rules. We could now see style verses style on cable TV.
In the early days of the UFC there was a style that stood out, and that was Jujitsu. Royce Gracie showed the world the effectiveness of Brazilian Jujitsu and it's value in the no rules fights. Now we saw a smaller weaker opponent make larger ones submit using various techniques that at the time were overlooked as necessary.
training
As far as training we have to remember that this is considered a full contact sport that allows techniques from almost any style. This allows artists from different styles to compete. Rules had to be put into place in order to gain public acceptance. The arts that used more striking found success while standing up while the jujitsu and wrestlers were more effective while on the ground. All this combined turned the martial arts world around. There is a big interest in what the most efective styles are. The training as you might expect is very tough and the competition is feirce.
Though many think of the sport as dangerous there are no recorded deaths related with the sport. Today the sport continues to grow as a high end ticket event. Training centers have sprung up in almost any city where the average person can get started. The training often includes thai kickboxing, wrestling and jujitsu.
