Jujitsu
This has several spellings. It can also be spelled Jujutsu and Jiu-Jitsu. It is a Japanese martial art and the name means "The art of softness". There are many different styles of this art and Jujitsu umbrella term that covers them all. Jujitsu was developed in old japan and is a way to defeat a larger and stronger opponent. The techniques use an attackers own weight and momentum against him. Some schools teach the use of weapons.
Today it is practiced in it's traditional form as well as a sport flavor. Most recently jujitsu has stood out as an effective art in the no holds barred and UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) circuits. It was here the world saw a smaller fighter beat a larger and stronger ones using jujitsu live on their cable TV.
history of jujitsu
By the mid 1800's over 2000 schools existed. It's easy to see why there are so many different styles today. As the practice of wearing armor faded the art evolved as an attacker would probably be wearing regular clothes. Over time law enforcement and security forces have trained in this effective japanese martial art. The Tokyo police department has it's own unique style taught to their police. Jujitsu techniques have long been taught to the military as well.
Some schools teach more about throwing thecniques while others may teach more ground fighting or strikes and kicks. Jujitsu is known as a "soft" art as it uses leverage balance to defeat an attacker. This is much different from the "hard style" martial arts that teach power and speed striking to win. Though the different branches of the art may look different in practice there are common movements to all of them. One of the things they would have in common is having the opponent off balance to prepare for a throw, lock, or take down. But as each instructor adds his own moves and techniques jujitsu has many flavors.
Judo is actually a type of jujitsu but has become it's own free standing art of it's own. Jujitsu has influnced many other arts that were developed later. Judo is an example of this.
It all starts with grabbing the attacker, then taking him off balance. This is to prepare for a throwing technique to get the opponent to the ground. From here a finishing technique can be used. It is all about controlling the opponent and his body.
Today mostely goshin or "self defence" jujitsu is taught. This mostely developed outside Japan and usually has influnces from other arts. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a good example of that. Jujitsu in the west may be adopted more to the westerner's needs. There are thousands of new branches and are known as gendai jujutsu which would mean it was developed in modern times.
