Judo
Judo is a Japanese martial art. As it's roots start in the late 1800's it can be considered a modern art. It's also well known as a sport. The object of judo is to throw the opponent to the ground or to make him submit by some other technique. Judo may also be known as jiu-jitsu in some circles
The judo student learns to use an opponent's size, weight, and momentum against him to be in control of a circumstance. Judo can be roughly translated to mean "The way of gentleness". The student is known as a "Judoka". Though traditionally only those above fourth degree black belt would be refered to as "Sensei", today anyone in a teaching position may hold that title.
techniques
The primary study in judo is the throwing techniques but other things are learned such as joint locks, ground work, and choke holds. Also studied is how to pin an opponent down. In practice two users may attempt any throw or technique.
Judo has it's own kata or forms. Some are officially recognized, some are not. The patterns illustrate movements often not allowed in competition. Judo has two phases, standing and ground. Each phase has it's own techniques. These are known as combat phases. Well trained in both a student would be able to take a subject down and pin or make the opponent submit.
